Dan Yr Ogof, also known as the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, is a 17-kilometre (11 miles) long cave system within the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is the main feature of a show cave complex, which is claimed to be the largest in Europe.
Dan Yr Ogof approached us to consider what a digital interpretation of their attraction would look like for a visitor to their site. After careful consideration we pitched the idea of an 'Adventure App' initially for the iPad which would have several features for a visitor to engage with whilst at the site and some features that could be utilised before a visit.
Our solution to the brief was to make several site visits to Dan Yr Ogof and to immerse ourselves fully within the experience. It was through this discovery phase we could then provide informed ideas to fully enhance the site.
We then looked at features for the app which included extensive general information, cave formation interactive guide, Augmented Reality dinosaurs (using the Metaio development platform for offline use), audio tours and an interactive treasure hunt all completely bilingual (English and Welsh). The app is complimented by having printed supporting material around the site that sets off features in the app for visitors.
